*This will contain relevant broken laws from episode 2×01.

This episode starts with a flashback of Emily/Amanda with her mother singing in the car. In present time, Nolan wakes Emily up from the nightmare induced by the Victoria Grayson horror movie, as Nolan calls it. Emily insists that the white-haired man won’t kill her. She tells Nolan that Victoria was lying about the government protecting her.

Emily calls Daniel to tell him that Charlotte is scared of her doctor. She reveals that she did research on the doctor and he has a history of keeping patients longer than usual. Emily insinuates that the doctor may have fixed the drug test, which we know is true based on the events in the previous episode. Daniel asks Emily to email him everything she found about Charlotte’s doctor. The arrangement between Conrad and Charlotte’s doctor breaks a myriad of laws.

Run, Ali Run… From The Law! (Recap + Broken Laws in PLL episode 5×06)

Note that this will include broken laws from previous PLL episodes, mainly 5×05.

The episode begins where we left off last week. The girls are stunned to get a text from “A,” apparently they actually believed that Shana was the only “A” they had to worry about. “Did you miss me bitches?” Toby’s house completely explodes and the girls don’t yet know where Toby is. Toby calls Spencer from the hospital. He’s ok, and nobody was inside the house but his father who we have yet to meet broke his leg trying to avoid a tree. Caleb’s at the hospital with Toby, rekindling their bromance. The girls finally figure out that “A” woke up from his or her nap.

Hanna runs into Caleb at the coffee shop (again). Hanna doesn’t understand why “A” blew up Toby’s house when the girls were so nearby. Caleb tells Hanna that “A” doesn’t shoot and miss, so there must be a reason that “A” did not hurt the girls. “The cops in this town should be riding around in clown cars” according to Caleb. I guess he’s excluding the ones who are riding around in coffins, but he makes a good point. It’s obvious that Hanna and Caleb still have feelings for each other even though Hanna  is currently dating Travis. She explains that she had no idea when and if Caleb was returning.  Caleb claims that he won’t be staying in town long, but Tyler Blackburn is a series regular again, so we’ll see what happens! I’m rooting for Haleb.

Surfing The Aftershock… In A Wave Of Broken Laws (Broken Laws + TV Recap of PLL Episode 5×03)

Note: This entry will also cover relevant broken laws from episode 5×02 This episode begins with a dazed Ali in bed, grieving about her mother. The girls try to help, but Ali’s dad and brother tell them to leave. The DiLaurentis men are always so polite to the girls. Kenneth doesn’t want any police or press at Jessica’s funeral, and Jason says he’s taken care of that. Judging by the family track record, there should be a barricade of detectives surrounding this funeral, but let’s respect their wishes!

The girls have clearly run out of theories; Aria nearly believes that Ali’s new dog is “A.” Does the think it’s Shana’s reincarnation, since the girls are so convinced that “A” died when Shana did? Spencer insists that she’s changed her mind about Jason and no longer believes that he killed Mrs. DiLaurentis. He looked so shocked when he saw the body, and cunning murderers can never have deceiving expressions on their faces! Ali gets ready for her mom’s funeral and winds up “coincidently choosing” the same dress that Mrs. DiLaurentis wore to Ali’s “funeral” back when Ali was “dead.” Ali acts clueless; she claims that she wanted to feel closer to her mother and had no idea that her mother wore the dress to her fake funeral.

At school, the girls are called to Vice Principal Hackett’s office. He promises them that the school will provide them “limited protection,” but he wants them to keep the disruptions to a minimum. Spencer expresses concern about Noel, Mona, and Ezra, since all of them know that Alison was not kidnapped. Spencer insists that they need to make sure everyone will go along with their story, but Aria protests against going to see Ezra to discuss their cover story. Speaking of that cover story, even if Ali’s suffering a bit of culture shock, she surely still knows that lying to the police is illegal!

EscApe from New York… Pretty Little Crimes From New York to Rosewood- broken laws+tv recap of PLL episode 5×01

Note that some of this entry will refer to Pennsylvania law and other parts will refer to New York law. This depends on where the crimes of this episode take place.

The premiere of season 5 begins in New York, seconds after we left off in the finale of season 4. The girls are in hiding, especially Alison. “A” is still on the loose because the girls thrive on letting “A” escape. The police arrive at the scene of Ezra’s shooting. Noel shows up right after Ezra got shot; he tells the police that he heard a gun shot and ran up to the roof where he found Ezra already on the ground. Noel’s arrival seems quick for a person allegedly neither aware of nor involved in the chaotic events of the season 4 finale. An ambulance arrives to rush Ezra to the hospital, and the girls stop Aria from approaching Ezra, because that could subject her to a long night of police questioning. The girls devise a brilliant plan based on Spencer and Alison’s vast, historical knowledge. They decide, once again, that it’s best to split up. It’s worked so well for them in the past, so why not? Part of the plan involves Hanna calling the police informing them that the man who was shot is Ezra Fitz and that it didn’t look like an accident. Hanna suggests that the police send someone to the hospital because Ezra might not be safe there.

At the Hastings’ house, Veronica and Melissa discuss Alison; they have differing opinions. Veronica attempts to refrain from judging too quickly; nobody knows what Alison has been through during the past few years. Melissa sympathizes with the family of the other missing girl, the one who’s dead in Alison’s grave. Melissa emphasizes that she really thought it was Alison in that grave. Her tone is odd, like she knows more than she’s letting on. Melissa strongly disapproves of Alison, the walking time bomb, playing dead to her friends and family for all of this time. Melissa starts telling her mother that there’s something she should know, but Peter Hastings gives her a “shut up” look, and the Hastings family notices police lights outside of their house. Their doorbell rings just as they notice the lights.

CeCe escapes from police custody, and Detective Holbrook pays the Hastings a house call to inform them of this. He explains that CeCe knows that Alison was alive and that he thinks CeCe knows where the other PLLs are as well. He suggests that CeCe assaulted Officer Maple in some way and stole his patrol car to escape.

Chaos…And Chaotically Broken Laws -Revenge TV Recap+ Broken Laws- Episode 1×15-

Note: Relevant broken laws from previous episodes will be explored in this entry. Because of this, there are 22 broken laws in this entry, which is why it’s longer than usual!

This episode begins with a voiceover in which Emily discusses losing control. We’re taken to the infamous beach shooting scene from the engagement party from the pilot episode as Emily’s voice over continues, “The best way to fight chaos is with chaos.” This time, we see a slightly different version of the scene; we see someone take a piece of paper away from the body before firing two gunshots.

Right when it seems like we’ve finally reached real time for the engagement party, we’re taken back in time, but this time only to 24 hours prior to the party. Nolan and Emily frantically search an empty hotel room. They’re looking for Amanda (Margarita Levieva); her phone was left behind, but Emily’s “revenge box” is missing. Emily insists to Nolan that Amanda would never betray her like this, then she uses Amanda’s phone to call whoever is behind this betrayal.

Tyler answers the call and refers to Emily as “the devil’s daughter.” He explains that he’s gotten out of the institution for the criminally insane. He warns Emily against doing anything rash like canceling the engagement party or calling the police. When Emily asks what Tyler wants, he responds that money would be nice, but so would vindication. Unfortunately, Tyler’s not just taking Emily’s word on his demands; he’s holding Amanda hostage. He has gagged her, and for a crazier touch, is holding her at gunpoint. In case anyone hasn’t guessed, his behavior brings us straight to:

Broken Law # 1 Alert!

Judging by Amanda’s screeches for help, if the gag and gun didn’t prove this sufficiently, Amanda is clearly not with Tyler by choice. NY PEN LAW  § 135.10 Unlawful imprisonment in the first degree.

The Broken Laws of Revenge – recap + broken laws in the pilot episode of Revenge

Share Button
Share Button

The first episode of “Revenge” begins with a bang in the form of a gunshot. Simultaneously, in a voice-over, a female eerily explains her views on revenge. Note that the beginning of the episode takes place in a flash-forward; it happens 5 months after present day in the episode. The woman in the voice-over emphasizes that this story is not about forgiveness. Somebody fires more gunshots, and a young man falls victim to them and collapses on the beach.

Still in flash-forward time, the people who aren’t wearing bullets are dressed in fancy attire at an engagement party for Emily Thorne (Emily VanCamp) and Daniel Grayson (Joshua Bowman). Thanks to the fireworks at the party, none of the guests hear the gunshots. Emily is the person who was speaking in the voice-over; she’s wearing a pretty red dress, but it doesn’t seem like she’s in party mode. Her fiancé, Daniel, is a no-show at his own party. A friend of Emily’s, who is working at the party, asks Emily about Daniel’s whereabouts. Emily replies that she and Daniel are having a “thing,” and he took a walk on the beach. Does “thing” mean fight? Or perhaps it means shootout. Emily assures her friend that Daniel will be back shortly. Next, Nolan Ross (Gabriel Mann) greets Emily, but their conversation does not seem friendly. Emily scolds him; according to her, Nolan shouldn’t be at the party. Nolan taunts Emily, “That makes two of us.” Isn’t she the bride-to-be at her own engagement party?

Meanwhile, a teenage male guest expresses his adoration for his tuxedo. He complains that he looks like a jackass. The girl he’s with flirtatiously leads him out of the party and towards the beach, not realizing that they’re walking into a crime scene. A man pulls the dead body out of the beach and onto the sand, then hides when he notices the teenage couple stripping down to their underwear by the water. This man could be a pervert, a murderer, or completely innocent.

Legal Note 1: My blog policy is to explore the broken laws when we know who is responsible for them. Right now, we don’t know who shot the dead guy at the beach, but when we find out, I’ll definitely be exploring this fatal shooting further. I don’t want any readers thinking that I failed to notice that murder is illegal.

A Tale of Two Confessions…And Too Many Crimes (Recap + Broken Laws of Twisted 4×19)

This entry contains relevant broken laws from episode 4×18 too

This episode begins with a shirtless Charlie creepily doing pushups while staring at a picture of Jo. This is quickly interrupted when Kyle knocks on his door and informs him that they’re going on a ride. Charlie agrees to go with him.

Meanwhile, Tess and Jo discuss Jo’s shocking revelation that she was there when Danny killed Vikram. Tess supports Jo and agrees that it was self defense and not Danny’s fault. This conversation is a result of Danny’s confession in episode 1×18.

Legal Note 1: (from 1×18)

–Since Danny voluntarily confessed to Kyle, there is NOT a legal problem with the confession taking place before Danny had been read his rights. The 5th amendment Miranda rights apply to involuntary confessions. — Additionally, some states have laws requiring an adult (parent/guardian) to be present during the questioning of a minor. In New York, this law applies to minors UNDER the age of 16, and Danny is 16 years old.   –I’m presuming that Kyle DID read Danny his 5th amendment rights before questioning him further. This means that Danny was informed that he had the right to remain silent and that he did not have to answer any questions without an attorney present. Considering that Danny was very cooperative in answering Kyle’s questions, it appears that Danny voluntarily waived these rights. It actually does seem that Kyle DID do this by the books!  Although Danny was cooperative in answering Kyle’s questions, he did not answer all of them honestly, which presents a problem. This show wouldn’t be “Twisted” if everything went smoothly!
