A Little Kidnapped : Brief Legal Recap of episode 7×02 of PLL, Bedlam, Featuring A.D.
The girls were shockingly well behaved in the legal world in this episode of Pretty Little Liars. But not to worry, I still have legal discussion points! We are going to take this brief burst of good behavior by our characters to discuss the exact opposite conduct by our very own villain, A.D.
At the beginning of the episode, Mary Drake, against her better judgment (or so she says) brings Hanna to Spencer’s house to reunite with her friends instead of consulting with the police or perhaps a hospital. Hanna doesn’t trust the police and doctors in this town, a sentiment to which Mary admits later in the episode that she can relate. Mary makes this admission in conversation with Spencer on her choice to bring Hanna to her house despite the condition in which she found her.
At the end of episode 7×01, Mary found Hanna wearing more bruises and blood than clothing. It was clear something horrible had happened during her ordeal, and we saw some photos and clips courtesy of A.D. In the premiere A.D also was kind enough to send Hanna’s friends photos of her bloody face. Additionally, we as viewers saw some of what Hanna went through.
We saw her getting doused in water to the point of extreme discomfort, she clearly was physically attacked by this mystery person, and that’s just the information we have as of now. Despite the trauma and torture from which Hanna just escaped, aside from a few questions from Aria, the PLLs and company understand that in Rosewood, it might not be best for Hanna to report the incident to any authority figures. I understand it too, especially considering the horrific track record the doctors and police in rosewood have with the girls.
After Spencer’s house, Hanna’s friends bring her to Lucas’s loft. There, Emily encourages Hanna to call her fiancé, something that none of her friends did during the time Hanna was missing and getting abused. Hanna’s response to Emily’s suggestion is our blog quote of the day and will lead us to our discussion about A.D.’s behavior. Hanna has no desire to call her fiancé (who by the end of this episode no longer is her fiancé). When Emily presses the idea and insists that Hanna will feel better after hearing Jordan’s voice, Hanna fires back. “And tell him what? I got myself a little kidnapped for awhile?”
Generally my policy in this blog for PLL is not to cover A’s behavior until we learn his or her identity. However I make exceptions when the other characters behave too well for my blog’s own good. None of you thought kidnapping was legal, right?

Tick Tock Bitches! So many crimes, such little time. PLL 7.01 Legal Recap!
Mary Drake, who the actress refers to as “the new b*tch in town” just became the new owner of the scariest resort on earth, The Lost Woods Resort. She immediately goes to the police station to report a break in, which Ezra astutely points out, was orchestrated by the liars and company. This makes them look bad in the eyes of the law.

Breaking Down Broken Laws in PLL based on Marlene King’s interview: PART ONE
FrAmed but Proven Guilty: The Broken Laws in PLL episode 6×08
This edition of Pretty Little Broken Laws will focus on Alison and Lorenzo. In the episode, Alison visits Lorenzo who is still recovering from last week’s arcade riot, the result of the police invading Jason’s so-called private rendez-vous with Charles.
Alison folds Lorenzo’s clothing and makes him soup; she charms him with claims that she couldn’t think of a better way to thank him. But when Lorenzo falls asleep, Ali thinks of the best way to thank him! She steals his police ID/key so that she can see the evidence about Charles with her own eyes and without permission.
Because the police in Rosewood are so vigilant, her plan goes off without a hitch until Tanner catches her. “I didn’t touch anything!” Alison insists while simultaneously holding a piece of evidence in her hands; it’s her old rattle from when she was a baby and the police found it in the bunker. The only problem is that now, the rattle is evidence from a crime scene and Ali isn’t allowed to play with it like she’s a newborn.
Ali must have felt left out because her friends have been busy breaking into animal labs (check out my entry on that )while she has been on her best behavior, but now she’s pushing her luck.

LEGAL NOTE: Ali would likely get the second degree misdemeanor here.
Pretty little burglars : part two of the broken laws of PLL 6×06
Here is part two of my legal analysis of episode 6×06 of PLL.
The girls, minus Emily, break into the lab where Lesli works and discover that she does some sort of animal testing work. Spencer immediately wants to go through her receipts amongst her other belongings. Spencer discovers that the girls are chipped and it looks like Lesli did it, since Hanna starts beeping like crazy when they go near a tracking device in the lab where she works. Chips like these are sometimes used in pets to prevent them from getting lost.
Once again, all of this is very scary but none of this makes the girls’ behavior legal. They broke into the lab with an obvious intent to break the law. I can’t believe the girls don’t explore the possibility that somebody else is framing Lesli for this or forcing her to do some of it, but once they have their suspect of the month, they stick to it until the police rule that person out. This is the norm in Rosewood and right now Lesli looks guilty as sin.
These girls love to work together and one day they might have to pay for their bond. Bad pun intended.
18 PA Cons. Stat. § 903. Criminal conspiracy.

Grand Theft Auto: Rosewood Drift, starring Hanna Marin and Spencer Hastings– the broken laws in PLL 6×06
This is part one for the broken laws in episode 6×06 of “Pretty Little Liars,” “No Stone Unturned.”
Let’s start with some fun Pretty Little Liars translation! In Rosewood; “Spencer has an appointment in Philly” is Hanna-talk for stealing Lesli Stone’s car. They don’t call her a pretty little liar for nothing; Hanna said it without even flinching when Ashley asked where she was going.
Hanna watches Lesli; she follows/ stalks her to her faculty meeting making snarky remarks about her tardiness and adding content to her pretty little criminal record. She uses a fake, dumb blonde ditzy charm to trick the man working for the valet parking service. She acts like her feelings are hurt because this man doesn’t remember her and her car and eventually manipulates him into handing over the car, literally he drives the car to her and hands her the keys! Hanna must have heard I was looking for some good content to put in this blog!
Hanna has taken me back to season one when the girls still had time to attend parties. Hanna was angry because her boyfriend at the time, Sean, wouldn’t ditch his virginity pact for her, so she stole his car and left the party in it. Now her motive was a lot different in this episode with Lesli’s car, but the crime is still the same!
Hanna’s broken laws: 18 PA Cons. Stat § 3928. Unauthorized use of automobiles and other vehicles.

Songs of Innocence… And Guilt.. Broken laws+ recap of PLL 6×02
Towards the beginning of the episode, we see Andrew get arrested, but not before Toby is able to tackle him to the ground! As Toby pounces on Spencer’s former academic decathlon captain, Andrew begs for Toby to listen to him and not to be violent. Toby ignores him and proceeds to punch him, pretty hard in my opinion, in the stomach. Admittedly if I believed that someone had kidnapped and tortured my significant other, I can’t imagine my reaction being pretty. However I would also know that I shouldn’t be the on duty police officer in such a circumstance, and this is something Toby doesn’t seem to have learned. Even if you think someone stalked your girlfriend, Toby is in the police department and still has a duty as a police officer that doesn’t get waived so he can kick Andrew Campbell’s ass. Fortunately, Toby’s partner, Lorenzo, stops this before it gets worse, and Toby implies that he would have continued; he demands for Lorenzo to give him 5 minutes alone with Andrew, and I doubt those minutes would have been pretty or peaceful. Thankfully Lorenzo refused to do this, commanding Toby to do his job instead of having an unauthorized, illegal wrestling match with a kidnapping suspect.
Because of police violence becoming an emerging topic of importance in society, I feel that it’s important to cover this. I did some research on the issue because of its complexity, and it turns out there are legal arguments that the current law in Pennsylvania might conflict with the federal law. It is NOT my place to decide if that’s true or not, but I will provide information to explain why it is possible but not guaranteed that Toby could get in legal trouble for what he did to Andrew. Some might argue that his violence wasn’t enough to warrant legal trouble, but others may not agree, and once again I felt this topic was important to discuss regardless of the outcome.
Toby’s Potential Broken Law! : Using Excessive Force as a Police Officer Section 1983 within Title 42 of the United States Code. And 18 PA Cons. Stat. § 508. Use of force in law enforcement.
Six Girls In A Dollhouse: Broken Laws in PLL 6×01
Usually I don’t cover A’s crimes until we learn a definitive identity of A, but for “Charles” I am making an exception. His crazy behavior has been the focus of the last two PLL episodes, as he thought it would be a good idea to forcibly restrain six girls in his disturbing, creepy, life-sized dollhouse. It’s scary to think about the fact that we once found Mona’s toy dollhouse problematic. Her entire lair comes dangerously close to looking normal at this point! In case you hadn’t figured this out, Charles’s conduct is NOT legal in the least, which makes him the perfect villain for my blog!
Let’s discuss the major elephant in the room first!
Charles’s Major Crime!

“They Don’t Allow Fireworks In Prison”: The Broken Laws in PLL 5×15, “Through A Glass, Darkly”
At the beginning of the episode, the girls attend Mona’s Hawaiian-themed funeral which takes place three months after her death. Her body hasn’t been found, but Mrs. Vanderwaal filled a casket with Mona’s keepsakes. She’s looking for closure, but Alison shows up to extend her supposed condolences and to insist that she had nothing to do with Mona’s murder. Mrs. Vanderwaal greets Ali with a loud slap in the face. It’s the kind of slap that I almost don’t want to write about because Ali deserved it so much, yet it’s still against the law.
