Hot For Teacher — But Even Hot Teachers Break The Law (Recap + Broken Laws for PLL Episode 4×18)
At the beginning of the episode, Ali’s at a pay phone trying to call home (and now Maroon 5 is probably stuck in your head)… Or Shana; she needs Shana to get something from her house. Emily wants to trust Shana, but Hanna disagrees, saying that Shana has “too many faces to count.” She makes a point, 2-faced is an understatement to describe some people in this show.
Spencer has a drug problem and is making it obvious in her demeanor. Even Hanna has already noticed her leg shaking. The girls all promise not to go searching for anything and to wait until they hear from Ali. I personally don’t see a point in making promises anymore with this crowd; we’ve seen how good Spencer is at keeping her word.
I enjoyed the little ADD medication montage that went on during Spencer’s frantic investigation of Ezra’s entire life. At first, she doesn’t remember that she’s dealing with a guy who lied about his last name, but when she searches for Ezra FitzGERALD she finds more results. I wonder if she can now recite the entire history of Board Shorts Ale given the amount of time she’s spent on her crazy research. She temporarily stops her search, but just to ask Andrew for more of his “notes” aka drugs. He’s all out, so she attempts to call her doctor posing as her mother. Judging by what happens later in the episode, it doesn’t seem like that call got her very far. I must mention that AWOLNATION’s song, “Sail” is 100% the perfect song for this scene… Good music cannot, however, change the fact that Spencer is breaking the law.
Broken Law # 1 Alert!
Slick, Spencer. Stick to caffeine, girl!
Ezra wants Aria to come to his super-safe, not-creepy-at-all cabin in the woods that he mentions just got broken into. Aria attempts to exude ignorance so that he doesn’t find out that she is the culprit. “What, like with robbers?”
Hanna gets her stuff back from Detective Holbrook, also now known as “Gabe.” She’s relieved to have her shoes back that were confiscated when Ashley was in prison. Now she feels like she has real feet again because of those heels! He mentions how busy he is with his investigation of CeCe, because it’s the norm around here for cops to chit-chat with teenagers about murder investigation. Welcome to Rosewood! “It’s the little things that are most important,” Gabe reminds Hanna. I certainly hope that proves to be true, because people spend a lot of time theorizing about this show!
When Emily tells Shana that she wants to help her with her Ali missions, Shana takes a stab at PLL fan pages everywhere by asking if Emily would like to contribute by making a “Friends of Ali” club equipped with collages and fan-fiction.
Hanna, taking her new cop BFF’s advice, pays attention to detail and tells Aria the details she’s noticed about Spencer; she’s clearly lying about something. Aria doesn’t care about this because she’s too busy with HER lies about Ezra. She does take the time to confirm something we already knew, Hanna’s friends have ZERO faith in her and think that she’s a MORON. When Aria finds out that Hanna has been talking to Gabe, she immediately assumes that the only thing Hanna has the ability to discuss is fashion. Hanna + Gabe = Book Club Buddies! Aria uses her father as her alibi for seeing Ezra this time. I’m losing track, first it’s her uncle’s cabin, now Syracuse with Byron… How does she keep up with her own stories?!
Since Andrew couldn’t help Spencer, Spencer finds another drug dealer — an intense, creepy girl named Brenda. Since Spencer didn’t show this girl her boobs, she doesn’t get any freebies this time like she did with Andrew; it’s $5 per pill. Of course, Ezra is lingering right near Spencer when she buys the drugs. He asks to talk to her about her “sub-par essay” that’s riddled with wikipedia commentary. He eerily reminds her that sloppy work leads to consequences and he’d hate to see her suffer. And if she does suffer, we learn in this episode that Ezra WILL see it; he’s got some crazy surveillance equipment in that cabin! Oh, and of course, as mentioned in my entry for last week’s episode, people can’t just go around selling their prescription drugs whenever they feel like it. This applied to Andrew last week, and now it applies to Brenda.
BROKEN LAW # 2 ALERT!
Controlled Substance, Drug, Device and Cosmetic Act (35 P. S. § § 780-101—780-144) (in relevant part)“…The sale at retail or dispensing of any controlled substance listed in Schedules II, III and IV to any person, except to one authorized by law to sell, dispense, prescribe or possess such substances, unless upon the written or oral prescription of a person licensed by law to prescribe such drug…”
Kudos to Brenda for committing a crime in her first ever PLL episode. Seriously, it helps my blog a lot!
Ezra continuously lingers in the background during scenes of this episode; we see him immediately after Aria talks to her guidance counselor about her frustration with lying about her boyfriend and her friends’ disapproval.
Emily and Hanna spy on Spencer in Hanna’s car after Spencer lies to Hanna pretending not to be home and claiming that she’s at the library. Hanna debunks this lie because she hears Spencer’s “stupid clock” in the background while they’re on the phone. Ezra’s right, Spencer’s getting sloppy! Hanna and Emily see Shana leaving Mrs. DiLaurentis’s house.
Ezra sneakily takes Spencer’s academic files which include information about her medication. While he’s doing this, he has a creepy scene with Jesse the guidance counselor.
LEGAL NOTE #1:
According to the rules set out in the Pennsylvania department of education, Ezra has not YET violated any law by looking at Spencer’s academic files. However, depending on what he chooses to do with her files, we may need to revisit this subject in the future.Shana shows up at Emily’s house because she needs her help. We see somebody in the background spying on them and taking pictures! Emily asks Shana questions about Paige. When Emily accuses Shana of spying on them, she assures Emily that she wasn’t SPYING, she was just “taking a look around.” Great, Shana! That is so much more comforting news! Shana recognizes the snow globe from Ali’s grandma. She tells Emily that she needs her help stealing something from a poster in Ali’s room.
Spencer goes to leave Aria a message which in turn would force her to tell her what she knows about Ezra, but at the last second, she chickens out and doesn’t leave the voicemail. This was the one time I actually WANTED Spencer to speak up.
The “Ezria” cabin scenes in this episode are all around creepy. First, Aria wants to go home and Ezra pretty much says that it’s a good thing for her to get closer to him and drift apart from her friends. Because that’s a completely normal thing for a boyfriend to want from his girlfriend.
Hanna corners Spencer about lying, but Spencer screams in her face for her to back off. Gabe/Detective Holbrook witnesses all of this. I wonder if Spencer will become a suspect again now; Her behavior is not helping her cause at all.
Emily gets the “thing” that Ali needed from her room, and it turns out that it’s $5,000.
Legal Note # 2!
Aria makes a point to mention that she’s been taking pictures around Ezra’s cabin. Ezra lies to her FACE about being out of chick peas as a method of getting Aria to leave the cabin to run an errand for him. The nerve of him! Vegans take their chick peas very seriously. When Aria leaves, Ezra goes to the creepy trap door in the cabin and we learn that it leads to his psycho lair. It’s extraordinarily high-tech and looks like it must be VERY expensive. He definitely didn’t pay for all of that with his teaching salary. He has eyes EVERYWHERE with the equipment in there; he has shots of the girls all over town. He knows what they’ve been doing for this entire episode and God knows how much longer than that. He even already sees that Emily took something from Ali’s house, and it looks like he knows what it is. Tisk, tisk, Ezra. Didn’t you learn in school that harassment is against the law?
Broken Law # 3 Alert!
18 Pa. C.S. § 2709. Harassment (in relevant part).“(a) OFFENSE DEFINED.– A person commits the crime of harassment when, with intent to harass, annoy or alarm another, the person:…
(2) follows the other person in or about a public place or places;
(3) engages in a course of conduct or repeatedly commits acts which serve no legitimate purpose;…”
“(c) GRADING.-
An offense under subsection (a)… (2) or (3) shall constitute a summary offense.”
Additionally, as with our discussion about Mona in my entry on the PLL episode, “Keep Your Friends Close,” Ezra could likely be found guilty of stalking as well:
Broken Law # 4 Alert!
18 Pa. C.S. § 2709.1. Stalking (in relevant part).“(a) OFFENSE DEFINED.– A person commits the crime of stalking when the person either:
(1) engages in a course of conduct or repeatedly commits acts toward another person, including following the person without proper authority, under circumstances which demonstrate either an intent to place such other person in reasonable fear of bodily injury or to cause substantial emotional distress to such other person; …”
Next, Emily and Shana talk on the phone and agree that Shana will come pick up the money after her swim meet. However, she never shows up, and the next time we see Shana, she’s in her car, looking in her rearview mirror and screaming in fear.
Hanna gets permission from Spencer’s mom to come to the house by lying and saying that she needs her nail polish that Spencer borrowed. Maybe she does bring some of this 1-track-fashion-mind reputation on herself. What she really does is spy on Spencer by going into her computer and looking at EVERYTHING Spencer has been doing and keeping from the girls. She figures out that Spencer suspects Ezra, and shows up just as Spencer is about to investigate Ezra’s apartment.
(Potential) Broken Law # 5 Alert!
Computer trespass – 18 Pa. Cons. Stat. § 7615 (in relevant part)
Spencer rings everyone in the entire building’s buzzer until someone answers. When somebody does, Spencer claims she’s there to deliver flowers, and the person lets her in the building. Hanna confronts her and asks Spencer if she’s on drugs. She gives her opinion on Spencer’s theory about Ezra: “you’ve gotta be on crack if you think Ezra is ‘A’!”
Broken Law # 6 Alert!
Last time I checked, Spencer was not a florist, so she gained entry to the building in a deceitful way. She IS a pretty little liar, so we can’t get too shocked!Criminal trespass – 18 Pa. Cons. Stat. § 3503 (in relevant part) : (a) Buildings and occupied structures.– (1) A person commits an offense if, knowing that he is not licensed or privileged to do so, he: (i) enters, gains entry by subterfuge or surreptitiously remains in any building or occupied structure or separately secured or occupied portion thereof. (2) An offense under paragraph (1)(i) is a felony of the third degree.
We discussed this in my entry on PLL “Reality Bites Me” for those who want to check up on the girls’ criminal history!
Ezra has footage of Aria sleeping AND of Hanna and Spencer snooping around his apartment. Spencer finds his key and opens the door, and Ezra watches and delivers the best/creepiest line ever “Walk away, Spencer!” Luckily for him, she complies, not because of his request that she didn’t hear, but because she sees that Ezra has a hidden camera set up. He is looking worse and worse. When Aria wakes up in the cabin, she’s freaked out and asks where Ezra was, so of course he tells some lie.
Even though Spencer DID walk away like Ezra wanted, she could still get in trouble. She DID take use his key without permission and step, very briefly, inside his apartment. If she hadn’t noticed the camera, she most likely intended to steal any evidence she found in Ezra’s apartment.
Broken Law # 7 Alert!
Burglary – 18 Pa. Cons. Stat. § 3502We discussed this one in my entry on PLL “The Guilty Girl’s Handbook” (see broken law 6) in regards to Wilden’s apartment.
“(a) Offense defined.–A person is guilty of burglary if he enters a building or occupied structure, or separately secured or occupied portion thereof, with intent to commit a crime therein, unless the premises are at the time open to the public or the actor is licensed or privileged to enter.
(c) Grading. :
(1) … burglary is a felony of the first degree.
When Spencer fully fills Emily and Hanna in on her theory about Ezra, the girls are in disbelief. “But he was so sweet to me when my mom was in jail!” Hanna protests. That statement in itself sounds absolutely ABSURD. Emily feels betrayed too; he helped her with her college essays! Spencer explains that this must have been his method to get close to them. She says that they can’t tell Aria about this until they’re 100% sure. That makes a lot of sense. Keep your friend in potential danger for even longer, because that’s what friends are for in this show.
Because this worked out so well for Emily recently, she once again reveals a secret about Ali that only she is supposed to know; she tells the girls about the money and that Shana never showed up to get it. BAD move, Emily!
At the end, Ali’s at a pay phone trying to call Shana again. This time, her phone call wakes Shana up. She’s asleep in the driver’s seat of her car and she doesn’t know where she is when she wakes up. It appears that she’s been drugged, which is no longer any surprise in PLL where everyone has probably been drugged at least one time. When Shana turns the lights on her car to figure out where she is, she realizes she’s right in front of a sign that says “You’re now leaving Rosewood. Come back again!” Except someone has painted DON’T, in red to make it say “DON’T come back again!” Someone is pissed at Shana, and she’s terrified enough to hang up the phone with Ali immediately with no explanation. Ali starts crying because she’s running out of money. She tearfully looks at a picture of herself and the other girls, then she takes the midnight bus going anywhere.
Last, we see “A” watching a creepy black and white film, which most likely is a RED herring to get us to suspect Ezra even more. “A” has one of Wren’s prescription pads. Maybe we’ll find out what Wren is up to soon, but for now I’m sufficiently creeped out by the characters who are in town!
How come sneaking into Shana's Car and assaulting/threatening her isn't listed as a Crime? Because we don't know who did it?
That's right… I have a policy on here that I write about the crimes when we find out WHO committed them. 🙂 You are absolutely correct that that's not legal though. It's definitely assault, especially as it appears that Shana was drugged, somebody drove her car to that location (she didn't know where she was) and left that threat on the sign. When we find out who did that, I'
