Firstly, while last week’s episode, “Into The Deep,” was quite eventful, our biggest offenders were either being institutionalized or tracked by ankle bracelets. Ashley is not a fan of her new required jewelry, but so far she’s being compliant. The only broken laws were committed by unknown offenders, and they will be addressed when we learn who was behind the crimes.
Onto the most recent episode, 4×10, “The Mirror Has Three Faces.”
This episode begins with our favorite four girls attempting to sneak back to school after cutting class to attempt to visit (and interrogate) Jenna. Hanna insists that they would have been more successful if they wore the candy stripe uniforms that they’ve already been caught wearing by hospital security cameras; that doesn’t sound like such a great plan either. Didn’t Hanna just get busted for trying to bury a concealed weapon that was used to murder a police officer? Has she learned nothing?
In the school hallway, Emily receives a text that she deems “worse than an ‘A’ text.” Mrs. DiLaurentis has texted her offering her a place to stay instead of the motel room where she has been living; Emily now has the opportunity to stay in Ali’s old bedroom. She is extraordinarily creeped out by this, but Hanna insists that Emily take Mrs. DiLaurentis up on the offer so that she can look for clues.
Spencer and Hanna debate over which is creepier: Emily’s current motel or Ali’s bedroom. Spencer feels that it’s scary to sleep in your dead best friend’s bedroom, but Hanna points out that Emily’s motel comes fully equipped with an ice machine employee who crushes ice with his armpits. This is a tough call, but Hanna deems Ali’s room the better choice; these girls have had some bad experiences with creepy hotels.
Spencer sees Ezra struggling to open the door to his classroom, as he’s forgotten his keys (for the second time today). She offers to help him get the door open because of her experience in picking locks. She should add that into her college admissions essay along with tales of her stay at Radley.
Hanna is asking Caleb about his progress in his sleuthing process of finding out who owns the forwarding address that they’re using to track Red Coat. Hanna wants to know if the address belongs to CeCe, so Caleb patiently explains that it’s a P.O. Box and people don’t jump out of those the way people jump out of birthday cakes. He mentions that he has a lead, so of course Hanna wants to know how he got it… until he mentions the word “firewall.” Fire what?! Ok, Caleb, you can take care of this on your own.
Aria shows Jake pictures that she has taken of him and they discuss his match tonight — and it requires head shots! Aria wants to go to the match and Jake agrees to this.
Wren is back! And apparently he is now a psychologist at Radley and Mona is his patient. He shows her a picture and asks for her emotional reaction, but Mona is not very cooperative. She insults the artist of the picture with snarky remarks. Then, Wren asks her about Wilden, and she still contends that she killed him to get him out of her friends’ way. Wren doesn’t believe her and he wishes Mona would trust him the way she did last time she was in Radley. Mona explains that she would never be honest with him again after finding out where his loyalties lie and that he had been keeping secrets from her. This whole exchange is bizarre; does this mean that Wren used to do A-team dirty work for Mona? Loyalties? Wren is loyal?
Toby heads to his loft where he finds an envelope labeled “Toby Cavanaugh” (we saw “A” with this envelope in the final scene of episode 4×09). Inside, he finds the music to a song called “Any Time” and a note that says “leave the lamb alone and go to the lion.”
Meanwhile, Spencer and Emily arrive at Emily’s new digs, Ali’s old bedroom. It doesn’t look old though; it looks exactly the same as it did when Ali still lived there. Emily freaks out about staying there because it looks like The Museum of Modern Alison DiLaurentis. Ali’s old hair accessories (even the creepy bows!), her posters and her jewelry remain placed in the bedroom as if nothing has changed. Mrs. DiLaurentis walks into the room and immediately wants Emily to feel at home. She apologizes that the house is cold; a repair man is coming later to fix the furnace. She offers the girls vanilla wafers, then she offers Emily some hangers, before realizing that all of the hangers are still being occupied by Alison’s clothing. Emily and Spencer look terrified of the closet when they see Ali’s entire wardrobe; it’s as if they think that if they open the closet doors, they’ll be taken into Narnia and get stuck there forever. Emily quickly ends this awkward moment by assuring Mrs. DiLaurentis that she doesn’t really wear clothes that need hangers.
While Emily is getting used to the Ali shrine that is her temporary bedroom, Hanna is at her house with Caleb. Hanna assures Caleb that she has not rekindled her friendship with carbs; the food in front of her is for her mother. Caleb thought that they’d go to Philly to investigate the mystery PO box, but Hanna informs him that Aria is already doing that; she has a different request. She wants Caleb to get her into Radley so that she can visit her crazy, old bestie, Mona. Caleb reminds Hanna that Mona is undergoing a psych evaluation and that it’s ridiculous for any of them to trust her at all. He suggests that Hanna go to the police and her parents and tell them that “A” is back.
Instead of talking to her mother or the police, Hanna stalks Wren down. Hanna begs Wren to let her in to see Mona. He refuses and says that he shouldn’t even be speaking to Hanna because of her mother’s situation. When Hanna explains that she wants to ask about CeCe, Wren seems troubled, and Hanna notices. When she asks about it, he explains that he was told that a blonde girl attempted to visit Mona last night and he had assumed that it was Hanna. He then pretty much says that the security system sucks at Radley because they’re short-staffed, and implies that CeCe may have gotten in somehow even though she was refused entry at the front desk. Hanna begs him to peruse the Radley security cameras to find out the truth, and Wren agrees to “see what he can do.”
Apparently, what he can do is immediately grab his cell phone to make a shady phone call to a mysterious person and say “We have a problem. I’ll take care of my end; you take care of yours.” We’re left wondering what that means.
Toby has shown Spencer the note he received. Clearly “the lamb” was a reference to Eddie Lamb, and Spencer somehow concludes that the lion is Doctor Palmer. Toby recognizes the sheet music that was sent to him; his mother used to play that song all of the time. He asks Spencer to go visit Doctor Palmer with him. She agrees to go, but she wants to know how long she will need to continue lying to her friends. Toby says that if the other girls find out about any of this, “A” will stop giving him information, so Spencer has to keep lying until Toby finds out what really happened to his mother. Evidently, Toby has decided that everything “A” tells him is trustworthy information.
Emily creeps around the DiLaurentis’ house, which is unusually dark, until she gets startled by Mrs. DiLaurentis. Mrs. DiLaurentis reveals that her husband is divorcing her.
A very angry Ezra Fitz confronts Maggie with an envelope from a DNA lab. It turns out, Ezra is not Malcolm’s father, and Maggie knew this the entire time. She attempts to come up with pathetic excuses, but Ezra is furious, AND he has grounds to sue her. That’s right, Maggie, you can’t just go around and tell people that they’re the father of your child, not without bringing us to:
Broken Law # 1 Alert!
According to Pennsylvania case law, Ezra would have a civil case against Maggie for fraud. Fraud is: “anything calculated to deceive, whether by single act or combination, or by suppression of truth, or suggestion of what is false, whether it be by direct falsehood or by innuendo, by speech or silence, word of mouth, or look or gesture.” Martin v. Hale Prods., 699 A.2d 1283, 1287-88 (Pa. Super. 1997)
The test for fraud: (1) misrepresentation, (2) a fraudulent utterance, (3) an intention by the maker that the recipient will thereby be induced to act, (4) justifiable reliance by the recipient upon the misrepresentation, and (5) damage to the recipient as a proximate result. N.C. v. M.H., 923 A.2d 499, 503 (Pa. Super. 2007)
Although since Ezra has no biological rights to Malcolm, since he’s not the father and his name wasn’t on the birth certificate, he still can sue Maggie for fraud and he’d have a chance at winning, given what she has done.
While Ezra surprises Maggie with all of the information he knows about her deceitful behavior, Hanna informs her friends, via text message, that CeCe may have visited Mona in Radley. She had just gone to drop off some papers at Mrs. Hastings’ office, and she catches Caleb headed in the same direction. Hanna interrupts Caleb’s plan to tell Veronica about “A.” Caleb explains that he’s worried that he isn’t enough to protect Hanna anymore against this enemy that is “everywhere and nowhere at the same time.” If those words sound familiar, it’s because Mona said the same thing about Red Coat when she was trapped in a burning building with the girls. Wren pulls up and stares at Hanna and Caleb with an odd expression on his face. It seems like he’s up to no good.
Next, Veronica Hastings heads home to get some files. She gets a surprise and clearly unwanted visit from Wren. When Wren brings up the possibility of Veronica still liking him, she laughs in his face and demands why he’s in her house. Wren explains that he came to warn Veronica about Mona. Veronica says that she doesn’t care why Mona confessed and whether or not her confession is true, because she’s an evil defense attorney who doesn’t care about the real facts as long as she wins her case.
Wren insists that while Mona did confess, she’s going to turn it around and use it against Veronica. He claims that Mona plans on saying that Veronica bullied her into confessing to murdering Wilden. When Veronica reminds Wren that he could lose his medical license by telling her this information, Wren seems oddly unconcerned. Maybe that’s because he’s experienced, somehow, in every type of field of medicine in the world. However, Veronica is correct; Wren has just broken the law, leading us to:
Broken Law # 2 Alert!
42 Pa.C.S. § 5944 – Psychotherapist-patient privilege: (in relevant part)“No psychiatrist or person who has been licensed . . . to practice psychology shall be, without the written consent of his client, examined in any civil or criminal matter as to any information acquired in
the course of his professional services in behalf of such client. The confidential relations and communications between a psychologist or psychiatrist and his client shall be on the same basis as those provided or prescribed by law between an attorney and client.”
According to case law, this applies to both, testimony and records created during the confidential relationship. Commonwealth v. Eck, 413 Pa. Super. 538,545, 605 A.2d 1248, 1252(1990)

For our purposes, I’m presuming that Wren does, in fact, have a license to practice psychology, although I truly don’t understand how a man that was still in medical school two years ago practices so many different fields of medicine. But if he has this license, he has also confirmed with Veronica that Mona is still his patient, so he’d definitely be in violation of the law.
I suppose it wouldn’t be a proper way to return back to Rosewood without breaking the law on your first day back!
Ezra is still screaming at Maggie, and she attempts to justify her behavior by explaining that she “knew there was a question and gave herself the answer that she wanted.” Apparently Maggie doesn’t realize that she’s in Rosewood, where lying is everybody’s specialty; she’s an amateur. The “answer she wanted?” That’s a nice euphemism for lying, Maggie! Ezra is devastated by this revelation, and as sad as this scene is, I’m sure Ezria fans all over the place just want Maggie and Malcolm to get out of Rosewood, NOW, Monopoly style. Do not pass GO, do not collect $200, just get out.
Meanwhile, the girl Ezra lost because of all of the commotion with Maggie, Aria, is currently on a scavenger hunt for CeCe Drake, while she’s supposed to be at Jake’s match. She plans to stalk every
vintage clothing boutique in town until she can locate CeCe. She has a good alibi though, she told him that she was going to get frozen yogurt. However, it seems like she’s been walking around for about an hour, so that yogurt must be really good! Aria finds an angry girl in a pink shirt packing boxes. Aria approaches her and states that she’s looking for CeCe Drake. Apparently this girl has a problem with CeCe also, since she responds, “If you find her, let me know.”
Emily is at Museum DiLaurentis, talking to Ali’s mom about how people have different ways of grieving. Mrs. DiLaurentis feels as if she “loses a piece of Ali” every day and claims that, that is her reason for recreating Ali’s bedroom. Emily opens up to Mrs. D about her relationship issues, to which Mrs. D has a somewhat odd response. She assumes that Emily is referring to a male significant other, but when Emily comes out to her, she implies that she knew that Emily was in love with Ali. She also wishes that Ali returned those feelings for Emily.
Back in Philly, Aria is still talking to the angry girl. She informs Aria that when CeCe “left” UPenn (at first she claims that CeCe dropped out, but Aria reveals that she knows that CeCe was kicked out), she was supposedly still paying rent. It appears that this girl is losing her apartment because of CeCe. The girl reveals that Ali got CeCe kicked out of school, or at least that’s CeCe’s story, and this girl believes it. She has met Alison and she could “see that girl pushing someone down the stairs.” We learn that she’s referring to the fraternity party the girls went to back in the beginning of the series. A girl was pushed down the stairs at that party, and according to this new information, Ali is the person who pushed the girl, and then she framed CeCe which got her kicked out of school.
As if that isn’t enough shocking information for Aria, the girl continues. She’s surprised Aria didn’t already know all of this, because she is part of the group of “she-devils,” as CeCe referred to them, that hung out with Alison. Aria learns that CeCe thought all of the girls were in on Alison’s little “prank,” and she held a grudge and hated all of them for it.
Potential Broken Law # 3 Alert!
If the girl’s story is true and Alison really pushed a girl down the stairs, Alison would have been guilty for:
Aggravated assault – 18 Pa. Cons. Stat. § 2702 (in relevant part):
“(a) Offense defined.–”A person is guilty of aggravated assault if he: attempts to cause serious bodily injury to another,or causes such injury intentionally, knowingly or recklessly under circumstances manifesting extreme indifference to the value of human life;…”
(b)Grading.–”Aggravated assault under subsection (a)(1)…is a felony of the first degree….”
Alison is making it really difficult for people to miss her.
Speaking of Alison, while Aria is finding out all of this news, Hanna is in Alison’s house looking for Mrs. DiLaurentis. As Hanna walks in, we see somebody in a red coat walk in as well, but of course Hanna doesn’t notice. Hanna roams around Ali’s room looking at her old trinkets, including a music box. In the mirror of the music box, we see that a person in a red coat and an Ali mask is in the same room as Hanna, and Hanna doesn’t notice this because she’s busy fiddling around with an old ring of Ali’s.
Spencer and Toby go to visit Dr. Palmer, and at first it seems as if he doesn’t have much information to give them. They both look disappointed. Meanwhile Aria is finally actually heading towards Jake’s match– he’s up in 5 minutes — but she gets a phone call from Ezra and tells Jake that she needs to take the call. Apparently she really meant “One sec, I have to decline this call in private!”
While Spencer is visiting one mental patient, her mother is visiting another; Veronica pays a visit to Mona in Radley to show her just how tough she is. She asks Mona why she’s taking the blame for Wilden’s death, and makes it clear that she has the connections to make sure Mona spends the rest of her life rotting in a jail cell if she should use this stunt against Spencer or her friends.
Back at the Dr. Palmer visit, Spencer miraculously knows how to play the song that Toby received on the piano, and wouldn’t you know it, there’s a piano conveniently in the room! Spencer begins playing it, and Dr. Palmer suddenly thinks that Spencer is Marion Cavanaugh, Toby’s mother. He asks her if Toby is coming today. Spencer weirdly pretends that she is her boyfriend’s dead mother so that she can get information out of Dr. Palmer. Dr. Palmer’s visiting time runs out just when Spencer asks Dr. Palmer about the dangerous blonde girl– you know, the one that Dr. Palmer warned “her” about, since she’s still playing the role of Marion Cavanaugh. Spencer asks if her name was CeCe Drake. Dr. Palmer doesn’t answer this, but instead asks the person wheeling him out of the room, “Can you please show Mrs. DiLaurentis to my office?”
Spencer attempts to report this to her friends, but she’s having a tough time convincing them that she’s 100% sure that Dr. Palmer said “Mrs. DiLaurentis,” while simultaneously lying and saying that Toby visited Dr. Palmer alone.
Hanna and Spencer want to ask Mrs. DiLaurentis if she knows anything about Dr. Palmer. Emily thinks that it’s too insensitive and she leaves to go to work. Hanna and Spencer stay, and Spencer asks Mrs. DiLaurentis if she knows of Dr. Palmer. She justifies her question by saying that Dr. Palmer mentioned Mrs. DiLaurentis. Mrs. DiLaurentis says that the name rings a bell, and that she thinks that she met him one time. Mrs. DiLaurentis starts telling the girls the story, and this brings us into a crazy flashback.
During the flashback, Mrs. DiLaurentis slammed a piano lid that Alison is playing with absolutely no regard to the fact that Ali had .5 seconds to move her fingers before they potentially got chopped off. Mrs. DiLaurentis was so furious because she had been punk’d by Ali and CeCe. She had received a phone call that her daughter was at Radley, and that she might be a danger to herself and others, and that she wanted to stay there. Mrs. DiLaurentis rushed to Radley to deal with the situation, only to find that Ali was never there; CeCe Drake was there dressed up in all of Alison’s clothes. Ali responded to Mrs. DiLaurentis’ story by saying “I can’t believe the crazy bitch actually did it.” And Mrs. DiLaurentis made it clear that this is the last game Ali and CeCe will ever play; CeCe was no longer welcome in their house.
This crazy story leads us to:
Broken Law # 4 Alert!
As angry as Mrs. DiLaurentis was because of the prank, her behavior towards Ali with the piano amounts to a crime.
Simple assault – 18 Pa. Cons. Stat. § 2701 (in relevant part):
(a) Offense defined.–A person is guilty of assault if he:
(1) attempts to cause…bodily injury to another…”
(b) Grading.–”Simple assault is a misdemeanor of the second
Back in real time, Spencer and Hanna are stunned by this story. Mrs. D tells them that from the very beginning of Ali and CeCe’s friendship, something was wrong. She contends that they were obsessed with each other and that they “wore each other’s personalities.”
At Spencer’s house, Spencer and Hanna relay this story to Caleb, who agrees that it’s messed up. Spencer theorizes that Ali must have had the masks of her face made for CeCe and not the PLLs. Veronica comes home and informs them that the court received an anonymous tip accusing Veronica of obstruction of justice; the person making the anonymous tip has claimed that Veronica bullied Mona into making her confession. Veronica further explains that even though the allegations are not true, she needs to recuse herself from the case in order to not harm Ashley’s case. This leaves Ashley currently without a lawyer.
Legal Note:
Although Mrs. Hastings didn’t bully Mona, I’m going to cite the law that she’s being accused of breaking.
Intimidation of witnesses or victims – 18 Pa. Cons. Stat. § 4952 (in relevant part):
(a) Offense defined.–A person commits an offense if, with the intent to or with the knowledge that his conduct will obstruct, impede, impair, prevent or interfere with the administration of criminal justice, he intimidates or attempts to intimidate any witness or victim to:…
(2) Give any false or misleading information or testimony relating to the commission of any crime to any law enforcement officer, prosecuting official or judge…”
(b) Grading: … (2) The offense is a felony of the first degree if a felony of the first degree or murder in the first or second degree was charged in the case in which the actor sought to influence or intimidate a witness or victim as specified in this subsection.
With such harsh allegations against her, even though they’re not true, Veronica is correct that they could potentially be used against her in court if she remains on Ashley’s case. Hanna is furious that Mrs. Hastings is recusing herself even though she didn’t do anything wrong. Spencer and Caleb want her to remain calm, so naturally she throws a temper tantrum and screams her head off.
It seems as though Aria falls for guys rather quickly; Jake’s match ended and they’re sitting on the steps switching off between eating and kissing.
Wren is on another mysterious phone call; he claims that he is “shocked” that Veronica would coerce Mona into confessing. However, something shady is definitely going on with Wren’s behavior; he continues on to state that he “dodged a bullet” by not marrying Melissa (and therefore not getting Veronica as a mother-in-law). He then says, with an eerie tone of voice, “that just goes to show that you can’t trust anyone.” I don’t know if anyone is trusting Wren right now either!
Emily is still with Mrs. DiLaurentis- who has now told her that she can call her Jessica. The repair man has come to fix the furnace, but upon fixing it, he found “another problem” in the DiLaurentis house. Emily and Jessica go to explore, and it turns out that somebody has secretly been using the DiLaurentis basement a “temporary home” as Jessica puts it. The basement is a mess, and Emily suggests calling the police, but Jessica is sure that the person is long gone by now. Emily discovers holes in the basement ceiling and realizes that someone has been spying on the household.
And, it’s not “Pretty Little Liars” without a creepy ending, so, at the end of the episode, we see “A” in Emily’s still severely damaged house. “A” is throwing things all over the place, breaking picture frames of Emily’s family, and worst of all, has put the mysterious dirty high
heels AKA damning evidence against Ashley Marin, in Emily’s house.
